Who we are
MakarantaAI ("we") is a learning app for secondary-school students in Nigeria: exam practice and an AI tutor, KaratuGPT, in Hausa and English. We decide how the data described here is used. Contact us at hello@makarantaai.com about anything in this policy.
Students under 18
Most of our students are children. If you are under 18, ask a parent or guardian before you create an online account. Parents and guardians can ask us at any time what we hold about their child, and ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing hello@makarantaai.com. We collect only what the app needs to work, we show no advertising and we never sell data.

The tutor in the Android app
Once you download the AI model, KaratuGPT runs on your phone. Your questions to it never leave your phone.
School sync
If your school gives you a sync server address and you turn sync on, a copy of your profile, scores and chats (never your PIN) goes to that school server, so your teachers can follow your progress. Your school is responsible for that copy.
Why we are allowed to use it
Under Nigeria's Data Protection Act 2023 we use your data with your consent (or your parent's or guardian's, if you are under 18) when you create an account, to provide the service you asked for, and for our legitimate interest in keeping the app working, fair and safe (usage counts, crash reports and daily limits), in ways that don't reveal who you are.
Who we share it with
Only the companies that run parts of MakarantaAI for us, and only for that: Google (Firebase sign-in and database, Crashlytics, Gemini AI), Cloudflare (website, servers and database) and Resend (email). Some of them process data outside Nigeria, under their own data protection commitments. We don't sell data or share it with advertisers.
How long we keep it
- Your online account: until you delete it.
- Data on your device: until you delete it or uninstall the app.
- Tutor limit counters: one day. Daily totals (with no browser or network details) are kept for statistics.
- Usage counts: kept for statistics; they don't identify you.
- Crash reports: 90 days.
Your rights
You (or your parent or guardian) can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or withdraw your consent.
- Delete everything yourself: in the app, open Settings → Privacy & your data → Delete everything. This deletes your data on the device, your online account (sign-in, profile and username) and, if sync is on, the copy on the sync server.
- Anything else: email hello@makarantaai.com. We reply within 30 days.
- If you are not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (ndpc.gov.ng).
Security
Connections to MakarantaAI are encrypted (HTTPS). Your PIN is stored scrambled and never uploaded. Only our admins, who sign in with a second code sent by email, can manage the app's content, and they cannot read your chats.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
